Trap Door Brewing has opened a new brewery in the town of Washougal, Washington.

they decided to offer some Founder’s Club packages and needed some marketing materials to help spread the word.

I was told that it needed to look “awesome” and also that it had to contain an enormous amount of information.

this was a real challenge, but after racking my brain for an idea, I wanted to try some mixed media art.

Washougal is sometimes referred to as “The Gateway to the Gorge” so I found some stock photography of the Columbia River Gorge and replaced the water with a bunch of hops.

I also took advantage of the yellow in Trap Door’s brand colors to create a giant sun out of their logo - providing light, revelation and beer to the Gorge.

I also cutout the Trap Door brewers and owners and placed them on top of the rock with a ray of light shining upon them.

the puple and peach sky is also something I added because I thought it looked pretty. the rest of the photo is desaturated to bring contrast to the other elements.

and in an attempt to charm the locals, I slipped the “W” from Washougal High School in the hops, because nothing goes together like beer and teenagers.

this is where the real challenge came in. fitting so much information in a 3.5”x5.5” space was no easy task, but I am pleased with the results and more importantly, Trap Door was pleased with the results!

I used the purple and peach colors from the sky of the Gorge picture and made heavy use of gradients to bring contrast to the letters in a more interesting way than just using solid lines for borders.
